Renaissance Long Beach Hotel Brings Art To Life As Local Artist Zach Howard Paints Mural In Sip Bar + Lounge

LONG BEACH, CA – September 3, 2014 – In its ongoing endeavor to elevate local discovery to an art form, the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel has invited local artist Zach Howard to paint a mural in the hotel's Sip Bar + Lounge.  He is currently at work free hand spray painting the mural. Since this project takes place in an indoor public space, Zach is also utilizing some brush work in addition to nontoxic spray paint.

The project, which began on September 1, is expected to take about two weeks and its evolution will be recorded using time-lapsed photography.  The overall size of the mural is 6 feet x 30 feet.

According to Pam Ryan, General Manager, "After I saw his mural in the East Village, I was blown away by how much it represented Long Beach as well as our hotel and the Renaissance brand.  Zach is an up-and-coming local artist who is extremely talented.  As a Millennial, he has a pulse on what resonates with both this age group — who is our target customer— as well as what melds with our downtown Long Beach location."  A sketch depicting one piece of the planned mural is pictured above.

The concept for the mural implies that one is submersed in the Pacific Ocean beyond thebreak wall, looking through the water and back at the skyline of circa 1950s Long Beach through today.  Scenes of an older Long Beach include the cyclone racer rollercoaster and clock tower, as well as indigenous sea life, the Queen Mary, and other artifacts.  Included in today's scene is a BMX bike, park bench, and relics from the Renaissance brand (i.e., compass, "R", etc.), and more.  He is shown at work in the hotel at right.

The Renaissance Long Beach Hotel works to provide guests with abundant discoveries inside and outside the lobby doors. Sidewalk cafés, vibrant nightlife, dining, music, theater, shopping, and now art await just steps from their room.

Long Beach has long been home to an eclectic mix of art from sculptures to beautifully detailed murals.  During the hotel's  "Day of Discovery" event this past June, the art community was able to show off its talents through ArtExchange, which is known for its innovative visual arts center in the East Village Arts District. ArtExchange featured live artists doing free-hand paintings throughout the evening.

Long Beach-based Zach Howard is known for his colorful illustrative acrylic paintings, large public murals, and technical drawings and design. He grew up in Colorado with his mother, a talented artist, and his father who together ran a T-shirt company. Surrounded by art throughout his childhood, Zach began his own art exploration at a young age and today primarily works with acrylics in large canvas or wood for his fine art and uses a more technical drawing pencil, pens, and ink washes for his illustrations, in concert with the digital aspect of design including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Corel. Zach produces large scale murals in his unique, colorful and expressive style using only spray paint and rollers.

Zach studied at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Institute of Colorado. He is a published children's book illustrator and a senior artist at the largest T-shirt company in the nation, Hybrid apparel, since 2005. He is one of the founders and Creative Director for Fresh Ink Clothing, and was also a member of the ArtExchange in Long Beach where he ran The Rogues Gallery.
