More designers are catering to America’s Baby Boomers (those people born from 1946 to 1964) which make up about 25% of America’s population. Although 90% of households have said they want to age in place, most have done nothing to prepare for this. For those who have taken steps, designers say one of the biggest updates being done in home design is adding a second master bedroom to the lower level in 2-story homes to accommodate homeowners’ needs as they age.
According to a new home trend study by the National Association of Home Builders, in addition to a first floor master bedroom, likely additions will include open floor plans, step-less walk-in showers, lighted and wider hallways and doorways, slip–free surfaces, grab bars, countertops that can rise or lower, touchless or tap-on faucets and ramps.
Other trends, from warm woods, creative combinations of colors, textured walls and furniture, and mirrored or crystal accents, provide numerous redecorating options. Many of these trends are easy and inexpensive. Expect the new year in 2012 to bring vivid colors with unusual combinations and contrasts.
Look for “Vintage Hollywood Glam” with lots of gold, crystal and metallic lacquers says a trendy Los Angeles based designer. She suggests adding a contemporary touch of textured wallpaper with metallic threading, a crystal chandelier over the dining room table and an ornate gilded mirror over the fireplace mantel for glamour.
Another designer suggests a crystal lamp or a mirrored table against a wall to add light and depth to a room. Such illusions of space can open up a small living room. Fabrics will include strong patterns with bold prints, modern floral designs and faux fur.
Bulky sofas will be replaced by lower backs and smaller pieces clustered into conversation groups. A wall mural can prove a cost effective way to make a statement from famous artworks to cityscapes, nature landscapes or murals created from your favorite photos.
Lighting options will include lamp bodies made of woods finished in neutral tones that showcase the natural wood grain. One Beverly Hills designer says he considers decorative lighting “the piece of jewelry in a room.”
Look to consignment stores and estate sales to be strong in 2012 as the focus remains on home improvement with a minimum of expense. Designers suggest you choose design concepts that inspire you to help create a brand new personality for your home.
