‘STUDIO SOCAL’ LOOKS AT COMPARISONS BETWEEN FERGUSON, MO, AND THE SOUTHLAND WITH EXCLUSIVE STORY ‘THE PEOPLE VS.POLICE’

BEST BET/TV HIGHLIGHT

AUGUST 29 AT 7 PM ON PBS SOCAL

Set against the backdrop of the recent high profile shooting and protests in Ferguson, MO, "Studio SoCaL" discovers that southern California has its own culture of violence when it presents"The People vs. Policeon Friday, August 29 at 7 pm on PBS SoCaL.

A Lynwood family that is suing law enforcement for just such a case, talked exclusively to "Studio SoCaL" reporter David Nazar.  In June of 2012 Kenny Rivera was shot and killed by an LA Sheriff's Deputy, Officer Norma Silva.  The Hispanic young man had made overtures about kidnapping a young teenage girl walking on the sidewalk but when she screamed, he quickly apologized and left the area.  Officer Silva followed and despite Rivera surrendering with arms up, he was shot in the back by the Officer, who claimed she was attacked.

Studio SoCaL hosts Rick Rieff and Elizabeth Esposito will be discussing how to solve this epidemic in the future, whether by new badge or dashboard cameras, or developing new police protocol.  Special guests joining this discussion include Leo Terrell, renowned civil rights attorney; and Jane Velez-Mitchell from CNN, who has started a campaign demanding police around the country get cameras on their badges, to prevent another Ferguson.
